Making Fire Safety a Part of Your Holiday Tradition
This holiday season, Ontario is encouraging all families to make fire safety a tradition.
Cooking, lighting candles and decorating with lights can cause fires if not done safely. To help prevent fires and keep you and your family safe, follow these fire safety tips:
- Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn, including curtains and furniture.
- Use battery-operated flameless candles.
- Stay in the kitchen when cooking, especially when using oil or cooking at high temperatures.
- Check and throw away old and damaged lights before decorating.
- Keep the base of your Christmas tree in water at all times.

- Last December, there were 60 injuries and seven fatalities related to fires in the province.
- The top five causes of fires in December are from heating equipment, unattended cooking, electrical distribution equipment, cigarettes and appliances.
