Another Successful Aging at Home Program Gives Seniors What They Want – Independence
June 30, 2010 – This week’s update during the final week of Seniors’ Month focuses on an assisted-living program in Renfrew County.
Serving 40 clients living in supportive housing apartments, this Aging at Home initiative is based in Eganville and Petawawa. It provides assistance with medications, help with meal preparation, and urgent response, for example. It is managed by a partnership of agencies, with Marianhill Inc. as the host organization.
Now in the third year of operation, the program has been found to reduce emergency room visits and premature admissions to long-term care homes. As a result of the success of this and similar projects, the Champlain LHIN is planning to expand assisted-living supports across our region.
“I am pleased that more is being done for community-based health services for seniors living in Renfrew County,” says MPP John Yakabuski (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke). “More home support is certainly what many residents of this region want, need, and deserve.”
“Seniors can often avoid institutionalization if they have the services in place to help them with their daily chores and periodic medical crises,” says Dr. Robert Cushman, Champlain LHIN CEO. “What’s more, these services will assist in preserving our publicly funded health system, which is facing significant and increasing demands.”
