Ottawa Public Health encourages residents to take steps to prevent noise-induced hearing loss

Ottawa - Ottawa Public Health has made resources available on ottawa.ca/health to inform and assist residents in taking protective measures to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Many leisure activities, such as listening to music at concerts, nightclubs and on personal stereos and Mp3 players, expose us to sounds that put us at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. The online resource “Protect Your Hearing and Enjoy the Music” offers residents advice to determine what sound levels pose a risk of hearing damage as well as practical steps everyone can take to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. People of all ages, including children and teenagers, can develop noise-induced hearing loss. According to Statistics Canada, more than one million adults across the country reported having a hearing-related disability, a number more than 50 per cent greater than the number of people reporting problems with their eyesight. The Hearing Foundation of Canada reports that noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common types of hearing damage. Being aware of the risks and taking preventative steps is the best way to protect yourself from noise-induced hearing loss. For information, visit ottawa.ca/health.
