First death linked to H1N1 flu virus in the five Eastern Counties
Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, announced that a local person infected with H1N1 flu virus has died at an Ottawa hospital. The 52-year old woman had chronic pre-existing medical conditions. Although laboratory tests have confirmed that the woman had the H1N1 flu virus, it’s not clear what role the virus played in her death. “Our sympathies go out to the family at this difficult time,” says Dr. Roumeliotis.
According to Dr. Roumeliotis, H1N1 is the current circulating strain of influenza, and new cases continue to be reported. “This is an unusual situation, as we typically don’t see influenza cases during the summer months,” states Dr. Roumeliotis. “Fortunately, most cases have been mild. However, as with seasonal influenza, we do expect to see some cases of more severe illness in people with risk factors such as chronic heart disease, lung disease, weakened immune system, diabetes and pregnancy. We continue to monitor the situation closely.”
Important preventive measures for lowering risk of infection
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit reminds the public that simple, routine measures can help protect against getting or spreading the infection. Preventive measures for the H1N1 flu virus are the same as for seasonal flu:
- Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve rather than your hands.
- Stay home when you’re sick, and keep your children home when they’re sick.
- Avoid visiting hospitals or long-term care facilities if you’re unwell.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you’ve been experiencing flu-like symptoms and your condition worsens.
